Kitsunes

WHY?
I love foxes. Fox demons in particular. That is the reason I even started watching Yu Yu Hakusho, actually. I was looking on EBAY for cool things to buy, and I encountered Youko Kurama. I knew nothing about Asian demons and how much they differed from the stories in the West.

I immediately became addicted. I went on a quest to find more about these elusive demons, fox demons in particular. I was surprised to find it near impossible to locate any stories on the internet. Images were scarce too, unless you were looking for fanart on sexualized girls with fox features.

°°° RESEARCH
I spoke to people offline. I spoke to people online. I don't know if people didn't know much, or it was taboo to speak about these things, but again, there was a reluctance to tell me about demons in the East. This page will be a collection however of texts and images, fully cited, of stories, myths, legends and references to fox demons. Maybe later I will expand it to encompass more Eastern demons (I love them all so much), but until I feel I have exhausted my resources it won't be happening soon.

CAN I?

The sources I have gathered have taken a very long time, they are from books and websites themselves. The only reason I copied the actual stories from the other websites, with credit, is because the internet is very temporal and linking to other sites can result in a broken information resource.

What deems a person fox-like? These are only a few of the definitions. They can have some, all, or parts of the follow list.

POP CULTURE REFERENCES
I know some of you are probably groaning at the mention of pop culture. As much as I'd like to ignore this, and state that only folklore is the accurate source, a lot of these references in pop culture are made off of modern legends and folklore. To be fair, and completely accurate, I think it's best to look at all possible references. I'm not interested in hearing how you disagree with me. Just a warning before hand -- SPOILERS might be ahead. I am not going into great detail about plot, but I might be revealing secrets of certain characters from anime and manga that you may be reading. To my knowledge, most of the characters listed who are fox demons, in some way, are usually revealed within the first two episodes or so. When the hunter does pass the exam, they guide them to the exact location, because to go alone is to meet certain death.

One day he killed a fox meaninglessly. The fox, now a spirit, cursed him into being a fox-man. He must save one thousand animals before he, and the dead fox, can be restored to their former bodies.
